Hiking in Halkidiki: The best trails and routes to explore
Halkidiki is usually discovered from the coast. By car, by boat or on foot in the sand. But move a little further inland and the landscape changes surprisingly fast. Pine forests replace beach bars, quiet paths climb above the coastline, and before long, the sea is something you look down at rather than swim in.
That is what makes hiking in Halkidiki so interesting. You do not need to choose between mountain and sea. Many routes give you both, often within the same walk.
From the forested coastline of Kassandra to the higher ground of Sithonia and Mount Holomontas, there are Halkidiki hiking trails for relaxed walkers as well as those looking for a longer day outdoors. Here are six routes worth adding to your plans.
Where to go hiking in Halkidiki?
There is no single answer. Some of the best Halkidiki routes stay close to the sea, while others lead into dense forest or climb towards panoramic viewpoints. Your choice will probably depend on how much time you have, your fitness level and, of course, how early you are willing to leave your hotel in the morning.
The distances and times below refer to commonly followed versions of each trail and may vary slightly depending on the exact starting point or route variation.

Sani to Siviri: A scenic coastal trail through the pine forest
- Distance: approx. 10 km, one way
- Duration: approx. 4–4.5 hours
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate
If you want one walk that captures the character of Kassandra particularly well, start here. The Sani–Siviri route follows the western coastline through pine woodland, with sections running above the sea and opening unexpectedly onto wide coastal views.
The trail is not technically demanding, but it is long enough to feel like a proper hike. Parts of the path also run close to cliff edges, so a little extra attention is needed. Butterflies, birds, and Mediterranean vegetation accompany much of the way, while the shade from the pine trees makes the landscape feel very different from the busy beaches nearby.
One practical detail matters: this is a one-way route, so arrange transportation back in advance unless you plan to retrace the trail.
Possidi to Kalandra: An easy walk through the pinewoods
- Distance: approx. 4.6 km
- Duration: approx. 2 hours
- Difficulty: Easy
Not every hike needs to take half the day. The commonly followed circular route above Possidi heads through the pinewoods towards Kalandra before returning to the coast, making it a good choice when you want to walk without turning the outing into an expedition.
Most of the route follows forest tracks. As you gain a little height, you get views in two directions: towards the sea on one side and across the olive-covered inland valley on the other.
It is a gentle introduction to hiking in Kassandra, particularly for couples, families with older children or anyone who simply wants to combine a morning walk with an afternoon at the beach.

Polychrono to Mavrobara Lake: A family-friendly nature trail
- Distance: approx. 5.9 km
- Duration: approx. 1 hour 45 minutes–2 hours
- Difficulty: Easy
What if you want something quieter than a coastal viewpoint? Head into the hills behind Polychrono.
The paths around Mavrobara Lake pass through pine forest and bring you to a small wetland known for its water turtles. The landscape feels surprisingly secluded considering how close it is to one of Kassandra’s popular seaside areas.
Different variations of the route are available, including longer loops with greater elevation gain, but an easier walk of around 6 km makes the area accessible to less experienced hikers too. Take your time once you reach the lake. This is one of those places where the point is not how quickly you complete the trail.
Hanioti to the Fire Lookout: Panoramic views over Kassandra
- Distance: approx. 12.8 km
- Duration: allow around 4 hours
- Difficulty: Moderate
For something more energetic, leave the coast behind in Hanioti and climb towards the ridge running through the interior of Kassandra.
The route gradually reaches higher ground and eventually the fire lookout, at around 300 metres elevation. The reward? Views that make the shape of the peninsula much easier to understand. From the ridge, the landscape opens towards Nea Skioni and Kassandra’s western coastline, while the return towards Hanioti reveals the eastern side.
Compared with the easier forest walks, this route requires more stamina and includes sections on smaller tracks. That extra effort, however, is precisely what makes the viewpoint at the top so satisfying.
Parthenonas and Mount Itamos: Hiking in the heart of Sithonia
- Distance: 8.4 km for the Parthenonas–Kosta Peak–Kamini loop
- Duration: approx. 2.5 hours
- Difficulty: Moderate
Sithonia has a wilder feel than Kassandra, and its hiking network reflects that. Around the traditional village of Parthenonas, marked trails spread across the slopes of Mount Itamos, also known as Dragoudelis.
A particularly good option starts from the village square and follows the trail towards Kosta Peak at 733 metres before looping back through Kamini. Along the way, pine forest, rocky sections and elevated viewpoints replace the more resort-oriented scenery of the coast.
And there is another reason to stop in Parthenonas afterwards. Instead of getting straight back into the car, spend some time walking through the old stone village. It gives the day a completely different rhythm.
Mount Holomontas: Explore Halkidiki’s mountain landscape
- Distance: approx. 6.9 km for a popular ridge loop
- Duration: approx. 2 hours 10 minutes
- Difficulty: Moderate
Mount Holomontas shows a side of Halkidiki that first-time visitors often never see. Here, the sea disappears almost entirely and the scenery becomes unmistakably mountainous.
Forests of oak, chestnut, pine, fir and beech cover much of the area, while the mountain reaches a maximum elevation of 1,165 metres. There are numerous routes, so distances vary significantly. A moderate ridge loop of around 6.9 km is a manageable introduction, while longer walks around Taxiarchis and the wider mountain network can easily fill most of the day.
If coastal hiking is about views, Holomontas is more about the forest itself: shade, changing vegetation, clearings and the feeling that you have travelled much further from the beaches than you actually have.

What to know before exploring the hiking trails of Halkidiki
A little planning makes a big difference. First, check the exact route before you leave and save an offline map or GPS track when possible. Trail conditions and markings can vary, especially away from the more organized networks.
Good walking shoes are essential, even on easier routes. Carry enough water, sun protection, and a light snack, and avoid beginning exposed trails during the hottest part of a summer day. An early start is far more enjoyable.
Spring and autumn are particularly pleasant for walking, but summer hiking is absolutely possible if you choose the right time of day. Also check weather conditions and any local restrictions or fire-risk notices before entering forested areas.
Most importantly, choose a route that matches your experience. A 6 km forest walk and a 13 km ridge route may both look manageable on a map, but they can feel very different once elevation, heat and terrain are added.
Combine hiking in Halkidiki with a relaxing stay by the sea

One of the pleasures of exploring Halkidiki on foot is that the day does not have to end on the trail.
From Olympion Sunset in Fourka, you are well placed to discover Kassandra and then return to a completely different setting by the water. After several hours among pine trees and forest tracks, a swim, some time at the wellness spa or a quiet evening on the beach feels particularly well earned. The hotel sits directly on Fourka Beach and also offers its Olive Seaside Bar & Restaurant for Mediterranean dining by the sea.
And when the sun begins to drop? Find a comfortable spot and stay there for a while, enjoying a beautiful Halkidiki sunset over the Aegean. After all, a day spent exploring Halkidiki does not always need another activity. Sometimes the best way to finish it is simply to watch the sky change color over the Aegean.
If your journey also includes Thessaloniki, you can keep exploring on foot there too, with plenty of scenic walks and outdoor escapes in and around the city. For an overnight stay, S Hotel Boutique offers the same warm hospitality in the heart of Thessaloniki, giving you an easy way to combine a city break with your time in Halkidiki.
